Les plus anciennes mentions en France situent le nom dans l'Isère. Sens incertain, mais il devrait s'agir d'un toponyme, si on en croit la forme "de Lovat", rencontrée au XVe siècle. Un hameau s'appelle Lovat à Lescheraines (73). Un rapport avec le loup semble à retenir, comme dans l'italien Lovato. D'ailleurs, il faut signaler que le nom de famille Lovat est également porté en Italie (Vénétie).
